Wednesday, December 19

  • 6pm- Studying the Founding Era (adults and teens)
    The Platt Memorial Library is one of 100 libraries in the country to win a “Revisiting the Founding Era” grant from the Gilder Lehrman Institute and the American Library Association. Come pick up your reader of primary source documents from the Revolutionary and early Federal period and get ready for a Winter Study Series. Abby will orient you to the reader, the grant program, and our special speakers in January and February. This program is a repeat of the Saturday, Dec. 15th event– no need to attend both.

Thursday, December 20

  • 5-7pm- LEGO Night (ages 5 and up)
    Come build with our giant collection of donated LEGOs. Build with a friend or on your own. Put your creation on display at the end!

  • 1pm-2pm MakerClub: Scribble Bots Challenge (ages 5 and up)
    An exciting return to our popular MakerClub programs! Every month we’ll offer a Maker-challenge or activity for ages 5 and up. Come by at 1pm for the instructions and materials; build, design, refine, and test your solution; when the timer goes off at 1:45pm the challenge is done! We’ll try out your solution. This month’s challenge is Scribble Bots– can you make a simple robot that draws a pattern? We’ll use some simple electronics and principles of vibrational movement for this challenge.

  • 7pm- Vermont Author: Katherine Arden
    The Platt Memorial Library is pleased to host internationally-renowned Vermont author Katherine Arden who will be speaking about her Winternight trilogy and her newest book, The Winter of the Witch. Copies of her books will be on hand for buying and signing. Light refreshments will be served. It may be cold outside, but you can warm up with a hot new read!

  • 7pm- Revisiting the Founding Era: Matthew Keagle
    The Platt Memorial Library is pleased to host Matthew Keagle, curator at Fort Ticonderoga as part of our Revisiting the Founding Era grant and our 2019 Keynote Speakers Series. Keagle will be leading us in a discussion about Section II of The Revisiting the Founding Ear Reader: Realizing Independence. The discussion will highlight the transition from colony to independent country through the lens of America’s military institutions. Light refreshments will be served.

    Join us for our annual winter fundraising bash! Maple Dessert Contest, live music, raffle prizes, and fun! Free admission; vote with your dollars for the best maple dessert. The winner can earn a spot on the coveted Golden Sap Bucket and bragging rights for a whole year. Entry forms are available at the library and online in mid-January. This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Platt, Inc. All proceeds benefit the Platt Memorial Library.

  • 6pm- Revisiting the Founding Era: Professor William Hart
    The Platt Memorial Library is pleased to host Dr. William Hart, Associate Professor of History at Middlebury College, part of our Revisiting the Founding Era grant and our 2019 Keynote Speakers Series. Dr. Hart will lead a discussion on Section IV of The Revisiting the Founding Era Reader: Governing a New Nation and the Unintended Consequences of Politics. He will trace how and why factionalism arose as the Founding Fathers struggled to govern our new nation, beginning with competing visions for the nation–federalist vs. anti-federalist. This guided discussion will investigate key issues from the 1790s, a decade defined by political strife, bringing up questions that still have relevance today. Light refreshments will be served.
