  • 3-5pm AT SHOREHAM ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Summer Reading Kick-off (Ages 5 and Up)
    Join us for a joint program between the Shoreham Elementary Community Partnership Committee and the Platt Memorial Library as we start our Summer Reading Season! Come to a quick taste of Astronaut Training School, our theme for Summer Reading this year. We’ll have snacks, activities, challenges, and free books for you to take home to start your summer reading off right! This program is sponsored by CLiF.

  • 6:30pm- Teen Advisory Council- (ages 12-18)
    Are you a teen between the ages of 12 and 18? Do you have a teen at home? Come on out to the Platt Library on Wednesday, May 29th from 6:30 – 7:30pm. We’ll have PIZZA and BROWNIES!
    In addition to a fun time and free food, you’ll have the chance to review BRAND NEW (and some not-yet published!) book selections for the Young Adult collection, learn about programs for Summer Reading and opportunities to volunteer at the library, as well as providing feedback about programs, events, and gatherings throughout 2019. Help make the library work for you!

  • 1pm- MakerClub- Astronaut Astronomy
    Learn about some of the myths and stories of the constellations. Make a constellation of your own. Earn points in your Astronaut Training School Take-Home Handbook!
  • 7pm- Movie Night- Star Wars Marathon!
    Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Rated PG-13)
    Enjoy popcorn and a great Star Wars movie on the big screen in the cool air-conditioning of the library.

    The perfect planet- We live on a Golidlocks planet– just right for human life! Explore some of the exo-planets in our galaxy and create your own, new planet with LEGOs. The challenge is– how will life be different on your new planet? What new technologies will we need to survive?
  • 7pm- Movie Night- Star Wars Marathon!
    Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (Rated PG-13)
    Enjoy popcorn and a great Star Wars movie on the big screen in the cool air-conditioning of the library.

    What skills do you need to be an astronaut? Get an overview of the summer with a little slice of astronaut training school. Find out about differences between life on earth and life in space. Try out real Astronaut Food!

    Star Wars: The Last Jedi (Rated PG-13)
    Enjoy popcorn and a great Star Wars movie on the big screen in the cool air-conditioning of the library.

  • 1pm- MakerClub- Astronaut Biographies
    Learn about some of the famous women involved in the space program. Build a rubber band rocket launcher to experiment with trajectory just like Katherine Johnson did! (Full disclosure: there is no evidence that Katherine Johnson ever built a rubber band rocket launcher. But she did definitely experiment with trajectory.)
  • 6:30pm- Paint and Chat: Galaxy Painted Tote (ages 8 and up)
    REGISTRATION REQUIRED
    Come hang out and create a beautiful Galaxy Painted tote bag to carry around your books this summer. This program is limited to 12 people, ages 8 and up only. Register online or by calling Platt Memorial Library at 802-897-2647. Light refreshments will be provided.

    We live in the Milky Way Galaxy. Learn more about the planets and stars in our galaxy and create some beautiful Galaxy slime to take home.

    Can you complete the Astronaut Obstacle Course? Earn points in your Astronaut Training School Take-Home Handbook and test your physical fitness on our obstacle course.
  • 2pm- Escape Room Challenge (ages 8 and up)
    You have 45 minutes to solve the puzzles, find the clues, unlock the locks to escape from the perils that await you in this Space-themed Challenge!

    Space presents many challenges for astronauts, one of the biggest is what kind of space suit will protect your body from the harsh conditions of space. Learn about space suits and experiment to create a suit that blocks UV rays from damaging your model astronaut.
  • 7pm- Movie Night- Spaceballs (PG)
    Enjoy popcorn and this irreverent Star Wars parody movie on the big screen in the cool air-conditioning of the library.

    Come hang out and create a beautiful Galaxy Painted candle holder. Feel free to bring your own glass jars– we’ll have some for everyone, but you can paint as many as you like. No registration required!

  • 1pm- Astronaut First Aid Training
    Come and learn the basics of First Aid Training. Earn points in your Astronaut Training School Take-Home Handbook! This entertaining program is not official certification, but designed to give kids the skills they need to handle bumps, bruises, scrapes, and when to get more help! Crucial for astronauts; helpful for summer time explorers here on Earth as well.

Monday, July 15

  • 1pm- MakerClub- Rocket Science
    Building rockets that will carry our astronauts to the moon and beyond is a big job. Come learn about some real-life rockets, shuttles, and space craft and experiment with film canister rockets.
  • 4pm- Live Stream from NASA- Simulation of Original Apollo 11 Landing
    The Platt Memorial Library is pleased to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Moon Landing. We will show a live streaming video feed from NASA of a simulation of the original Apollo 11 mission. This video feed will be shown in the Vermont Room.
  • 6:30pm- Wearable Electronics (ages 8 and up)
    Come create a cool, light-up pin, bracelet, necklace, headband or whatever you can dream up. We’ll be playing with circuitry and sewing to create some amazing wearable electronics in the shape of constellations.

  • 7pm- Emma Hart Willard: Pioneer in Women’s Higher Ed
    EEmma Hart Willard wrote, “Genuine learning has ever been said to give polish to man; why then should it not bestow added charm on women?” Willard was an American women’s rights activist who dedicated her life to female education in a time when women were not often accepted as thinkers. Dr. Susan Ouellette will discuss this accomplished figure who founded the first school for women’s higher education that helped shape the mind of the first suffragette, Elizabeth Cady Stanton. Almost two centuries after her first school opened and a century since women’s suffrage finally passed, her legacy is ever present. This program is part of the Orwell and Shoreham Libraries Keynote Speakers Series and sponsored by the Shoreham Historical Society. Refreshments will be served.
